Default Bream on fly..

Hey chaps. A serious question..

Has anyone ever had any luck in catching bream on fly....perhaps even by accident..? Visited the upper reaches of a estuary near me on friday and although its tidal, it remains to be fresh water, and to my absolute amazement its packed with bream. They sit in little schools of about 6 or 7 and line themselves up facing whichever way the water is pushing.

In my opinion they are just asking to be caught..!! And i would love to do it on fly. I also noticed a good head of carp, chub and saw one or two 10pounder pike, and all in about a 300m section of river. There is a weir marking the divide between tidal and non tidal. Below this weir the river is fishable for about 300m and this is where i saw all the fish. There are some deep holes and one or two decent bends. After roughly 300m it becomes very weeded up and very shallow and virtually un fishable. These fish have nowhere to go... about a mile or two downstream its salt water.

Def gonna return. Tried every fly (trout fly) in my box and had a sniff on Apps bloodworm. Thought it may look like a small worm or leeche. Do bream take bread of the surface...? If so i could target them like carp..

Any ideas....??

Cheers
Rich

I can catch them twice a year, when they are getting ready to spawn is the best time.. The strange thing about this is i almost only catch the male fish that are covered in the spawning pimples.. They are pretty agressive and actually pull quite hard, i tend to catch them best on pretty bright flies and stripped at a reasonable speed. But like i said they are quite agressive then.

The other time is just before winter, the bream here tend to migrate to deeper water and the roach do the opposite.. I actually am fishing for the big roach but if it is still to warm for them to come in the bream are there.. We catch them with slow fished nymphs near the bottom.

In summer i hardly ever get one don't know why, the same with the really big roach.. They are not surface feeders my best bet would be to fish a nymph..

Fishing Grafham a few years back from a boat. My mates rod bent double and a fight lasting 10 minutes turned up a false hooked bream weighing about 8lb .

I try my best to avoid them in the winter as they are covered in a lot of slime and really are poor in terms of putting up a fight. Your normal nymphs should cover them.

I do my best to avoid them even when I'm coarse fishing!

Hahaha...

I've heard they are not good fighters, but just seeing them all lined up and some in the 5 to 7lb range, makes me want to get one.

thanks

I am the same, avoid them even when coarse fishing if at all possible grrrrr. Spend hours baiting up and setting traps for that one elusive big carp and a bloody 2lb bream wakes you up in the middle of the night, slime and snot everywhere and no self respecting carp for miles.

I would ask toxic for some of his maggot flies they would definitely nobble them even( look in the fly tying forum on here)

I used to catch a few at Blenheim on the fly. Bloodworm or fairly standard nymph patterns did the trick. Not the most inspiring fish in the world to catch and if they fight it's probably because you've foul hooked one, otherwise they fight like the proverbial wet lettuce.
