Default GAC - Just business or a disgrace?

http://www.sundayherald.com/business...ed_himself.php

Buying flies for 5p each and selling them for 60p. Is that fair trade that Mr Devlin is smiling about? Surely there should be a little more going back into the third world countries that will be supplying him.

I don't buy flies, but I now think I'll have difficulty bringing myself to go there and buy materials ever again. He is not the only one of course, but his comment does leave a bit of a bad taste in the mouth.

Maybe he hasn't really thought through the implications of what he said? On the other hand, maybe he just doesn't care?

When I saw this article on the Wild Fishing Forum it was suggested that maybe if publicised more, this could be Mr Devlins "Ratner" moment. Do anglers care enough to make stand on this?

Paul,

I have made my own views perfectly clear on this elsewhere. A 1100% mark-up is, to my mind, disgusting, but hardly surprising. Personally I don’t think 60p is an unfair retail price for a fly and it leaves plenty of scope to allow the tiers considerably more than a miserable 5p. Modern day plantation slaves. I will never buy anything from GAC after reading that.

Openening a can of worms but what about the $25.00 rice rockets we call fly rods imported from ? the margins are also quite large on these.at wholesale level anyway.

It's very easy to look at the 5p price and be shocked by it. However, these fly tiers will probably be on double the average wage in their country. Judging it by our standards it may appear bad, but in real terms the tiers do well for themselves.

I would expect that 90% of the flies sold in this country are imported on a similar basis.

That is not condoning it or damning it, just my expectation.

Chris, I think this is a very fair comment. However fair trade and ethical buying is something that we should be thinking about and making ourselves aware of. Gander is right in raising the issue for disucssion on the forum. If there are questions we do not know the answer to, we should be finding them out.

A recent magazine article feaured Fulling Mill flies and showed a set up that appeared fair to all concerned.

5p to 60p may sound like a big jump, but we would need to consider how many steps there are between tyer and buyer. Each step will add a price and 55p is not a lot of money considering transport, packing, distribution, etc.

A subject worthy of thought.

Default Margins

When you hear of huge margins , you do have to look at stock holding to sales ratios. In my business , I carry 1 months stock so my mark up is low.My guess is that GAC carry far more than 1 months stock so that will be a consideration. That said, boasting about your mark up isn't the brightest comment combined with the developing world tie in

Sounds like there's a market for a 'fairtrade' badged fly supplier/retailer.

Before we decide what weight to place on this opinion, could you please disclose whether you have ever sold flies imported from Africa?
