Default intermediate line

i have just bought an intermediate WF6 and when i cast it most of the line appears to float. whats going on? i was told that it would sink at 1 -2 inch per second. the first couple of inches sink but the rest still floats. do i have to treat it with something or am i just mental thinking that an intermediate SINKING line would just sink at the said rate?

Give it a wash in some warm soapy water and it should do the job, seems a common enough problem with new lines.

Hello mate,

Think there was a thread abou this same subject a couple of weeks ago.

Good advice to wash the line first. I also keep a small bottle of washing up liquid in my bag when fishing and a small cloth. If your line is not sinking, wet the cloth in the water, add a touch of the washing up liquid and pull your line through it. It will degrease the line and help it to sink.

After casting my intermediate line I also put the rod tip under the water and give a quick pull on the line. This starts the line sinking at the rod tip end as well as the tip of the line and gets the sinking process started faster.

Hope this helps. Tight lines!

Nick.

You can get some line degreaser from Snowbee to degrease it as well.

As the line ages it will probably not exude as much silicone and sink more easily.

Sorry, a quick questions on your thread

Would it be stupid of me to clean my floating line in warm soapy water? or should I just clean it with warm water?

Degreasing some new intermediates and sinkers is fairly normal.

All PVC and PU lines can be cleaned in warm (not hot) soapy water as long as you don't over clean them, otherwise you can damage the plasticisers in the coating, thus reducing their longevity.

Although fly lines have to put up with a lot of stress, they are still fairly fragile creatures and need to be looked after.

Another tip, strip your line off and wind it back on through a baby wipe now and again. Also use baby wipes to clean your rod blank, rings and handle.

If you cut down the amount of cr@p that has been picked up and stuck to your rod and line (much of which can't been seen to the naked eye), your kit will perform better and last longer.

The Pirate.

There is always the standard technical problem with low AFTM Intermediates .

The core is pretty common and effectively neutral being made usually out of High tenacity N66 braid and sinks very slowly and they use it on floaters and most sinkers .

The sinking bit is the plastics mix which coats it . Usually you'll find that the belly sinks faster than the tip and the running line - because that's where the heavier stuff is concentrated - the line is actually densest there .

But if there ain't much covering and there won't be with low aftm lines you can have a problem - and a worse one if they didn't stir up the bucket full of mix before they ran the lines because that can make a most interesting combination of random floaters and slow sinkers !

Best is to keep it clean because they do pick up scum and greases even off your fingers . And don't clean it with stuff designed for floaters because it may never sink again - detergent and warm water is tops .

best wishes

Steve P
