Default Cutting a floater!!

Hey folks I've got a 4wt WF floating line that I use for my river fishing, problem I'm having is that I need to have alot of the line out too load the rod properly. If I was to cu some of the front off to reduce the taper, would this allow the rod to load with less line??

Rather doubt it. Most, not all, WF lines have a very short (and I do mean short) level section in front of the taper. In a line this light I doubt you could tell the difference.

You may well be better off 'up-lining' by one to get the extra grains you need.

I have never tried it but i dont suppose it would do presentation and turnover much good-better to overline the rod by a weight or two

all the best Nick

Or you could try a Rio Outbound which is heavier than the AFTM weights for any given line size. The short shooting head loads the rod with very little line out of the tip and you don't have to overline the rod - you can even go to the Outbound Short for extreme situations.

I use them for stillwater situations where I have limited backcast room and have had them on the river as well.

Obviously the price you pay is that they land a little heavier but with a good caster this should not be too noticable.

I measured the line earlier, it's aprox 10ft before the taper starts...

AFTM line ratings are based on the first 30ft of line.

If you fish streams and rivers you may never have this much line out.

Personally I would buy a DT5 line, cut it in 2 and store the second half. Keeping it on the reel would only damage it.

Then I would measure carefully the length of the level taper. And, if I was mostly fishing overgrown rivers and streams (my favourites) I would trim a lot of it off.

cutting the tip back will change turn over, most likely badly, to load the rod more you need a heavier line or a softer rod, if your only making very short casts a line weight up will bring it back into balance.
