Default Visiting Norwich

I'm likely to be visiting just outside Norwich in August, just south of the ringroad in the Arminghall/Poringland area - last year had a good break in the area and visited a host of stillwaters (East Tuddenham / Rocklands Mere / Blackdyke / Larkwood / South Elmham / Tayberry / Willow Farm) - this is likely to be a briefer visit and thinking of any river / stream fishing - anyone got any suggestions on either moving (or stillwater) in that sort of area that I could look up when down there ?

Cheers PaulB

Hi Paul

I regularly fish Tuddenham and really enjoy it, without hijacking your thread just wondered how you rated South Elmham, Blackdyke, Willow Lakes and Larkwood as haven't fished these before and fancy a few extra outings!!

Can't help with any stream fishing based on personal experience I'm afraid but there's a bit of info on here - Fish & Fly - Fly fishing in Norfolk

Chris

Hey no worries - all info is useful to exchange and thanks for the pointer on that web page - good starting point and it was Gallyons that pointed me towards East Tuddenham and Larkwood which was helpful !

My purely personal experience of the ones you mention - East Tuddenham I do like even though last time wind was so strong my hat was blown into the water and in under 10 mins had completely reached the other side just a bit wetter and weedier for it's swim - so - bearing in mind I visited these in a heatwave and so even East Tud. was having a few issues with it's fish which was a shame, South Elmham I really liked, not sure why, perhaps because the two pools are quite different and there are a few different options and changes of scenery there, Blackdyke after one aborted visit got there for an evening which was quite pleasant, wouldn't mind going back again to explore round it a bit further - Willow Lakes only had the top pond open and quite quickly there was just one peg free so was totally dependendent on us all sharing around a bit but it the bottom pond were open definitely looked a nice venue to return to and Larkwood, great environment with good mix of open areas / sheltered areas plenty to go at and again would hope to visit again.

I guess in order I'd say East Tuddenham and South Elmham I felt most relaxed at, Larkwood definitely worth a vist, Willow if both ponds open would have another pop at and Blackdyke if I was passing nearby - it's the odd one out being a great big open circle of water if youlike that sort of thing ?

But hopefully above reflects one of the reasons I like that area - all the places so far tried have been good for one reason or another !!

cheers - Paul.

Thanks for that Paul, good summary!! Will be paying a visit to a couple of those over the Summer; South Elmham looks particularly nice.

If you fancy a trip out and a beer while you're down this way drop me a line

Chris

Hi i live in Norwich in fact i will be fishing east tuddenham tomorrow, but Rockland Mere is closed at the moment as it's was dug out to twice the size in March and has remained closed because we have had no rain to speak of and he is too low on water to open this may change in the next few weeks but if anyone is thinking of going there it would be a good idea to give them a call before running all the way out there, the number to call is 07900004953,and speak to James, Good luck Rod

Hi thanks for that info on Rocklands, called in a few evenings last year, really friendly gang running it and enjoyed it there and they said they were going to make it bigger overwinter .... they'll be pleased there's a drought then !

How's East Tuddenham fishing at the moment ?

cheers PaulB

Pretty good for me, not sure how Rods been finding it? The hot weather has killed off middle of the day fishing based on my outings and have had best success in the early mornings and late evenings.

Had a lot of fun on dry flies last week, lots of fish coming to the top and taking the fly literally as it hits the water which is great fun!!

There's a lot of weed at the moment which makes some areas difficult but there's still plenty of open water and lot of goodies in the weed for trout anyway so I like to have a cast along the side of them to see whats lurking

Chris

Well that's the stillwater front sorted then .... plenty of options to get up speed on then and from a previous visit I seem to think that East Tuddenham is ok to turn up to fish as long as it's actually light so can be extremely early or pretty late if you fancy it ....... thanks for that info much appreciated and hopefully may be able to meet up and put faces to names ! I might try a new thread heading of 'Rivers near Norwich' and see if that throws up any other ideas as well to keep all the options open. But definitely looking forward to visiting the area again !
