Default Fish made a fool out of me!

Hi Guys,

I was away fishing for an hr yesterday on the local River Ayr right away up at the start of it where the streams are only 12 inch deep and 6 foot across. I managed to get two 8"-10" trout which were very easy to hook on a dry fly (small white 16) then returned BUT i was plagued by an army of 3"-4" trout which were just making a fool of me trying to hook these wee super fast buggers
Every cast they attacked my fly but couldn't hook them? I did get one though which was super exciting, a 100mph speedboat going through the water everywhere lol
My question is why do trout get easier to catch as they get older and bigger as it should be the other way around? easier when young and inexperienced!

Id rather fish for these wee missiles than large trout as to me its more fun

One view is that their little mouths struggle to engulf a 'big' (14, 16, 18?) fly and they feel the metal and back off, also you could liken them to cheeky little school kids, they are pretty nippy - great fun though, most fun I had going after the small stuff was being tested by lots of small Roach and Rudd in the down water side of a watermill in France, I could see them, put a fly on them and watch them take but not many came to hand; great fun though.

Welcome to the forum by the way & check out the small streams thread!
