The pool downstream of Darley Bridge is indeed free fishing as far as the Matlock a.c. sign. Most of the better fish tend to lie towards the far bank, I can remember one of 4lb+ being caught a couple of years back.
If you are thinking of fishing the area on a regular basis it might be worth investing in a Matlock book (£40 per season or £20 concessions), this gives acess to water at Oker, Matlock and Matlock Bath the latter bait fishing plus 3 coarse ponds.
Hope this helps
Dave

hi Dave thanks for the reply.
we went to Tansley car book this morning then on to Darley Bridge for a look.
we went into the Square and Compass for a drink ,wouldnt be polite not to.
had a word with the new landlord (Alan) he has only been there 3 weeks.
asked about the fishing and he told me same as you.
also available is the section belonging to the S + C . pub at £5 per day.
we had a drink then walked back over the bridge, only to find a family including 2 dogs splashing about in the bridge pool.

I noticed while in the pub a picture frame with a page from a news paper dated 1894.
It showed 3 drawn captions.
1st depicting the bridge with anglers with rods and creels with the pub in background.
the caption read Mr Edward Allen shows his famous flies to others anglers.
2nd drawing was of the Anglers bar inside the S + C pub.
( the stone fire place is still the same) .
3rd drawing was of the bridge with an angler wading the river about 100 yds down stream.
caption reads experienced angler fishes the bridge pool while a less experienced angler looks on.
I was admiring the picture when a chap came up to me
and told the tale of the picture.
apparently this chap saw the picture for sale on e bay told the landlord about it and so Alan then bought it.
I was told it came from a house 20 miles from John O`groats.
Any one know who Mr Edward Allen was.
I managed to take 1 picture on my mobil before the battery went dead.
will try to upload it it good enough.

Locals do tend to use the pool to cool off in hot weather and caravanners and campers from the S + C can also cause a few problems. Better in winter for Grayling or late evening if trout fishing.

Oker is still on the Derwent, the stretch being about a mile downstream of Darley Bridge.
It is only about 200-300yds long but a good bit quieter.

Hi Dave .
how do you get to the Oker section?. trying to place where it is.
Do they still have the section at back of cricket ground?
I was a member about 5 years ago but let it slide due to other commitments.
thanks for reply.

Either follow the gated road from Darley Bridge turning left at its end, about 50yds down the road is a public footpath sign. Park on the verge opposite and follow the path to the river. This field is controlled by Sheffield waltonians while Matlock have the field upstream (Oker stretch) and also the water downstream all the way to the town bridge. The water can also be acessed by following the road up from sainsbury's petrol station which brings you to the same place it's just easier to explain how to get there from Darley end.
As for the cricket pitch length the club no longer controls this section which is a pity as it was one of my favourite bits despite its short length.
Dave.
