Default lakeside at ranskill

Hi All
I've had a search both googled and for threads/posts on the forum but cant find much information on this venue. Has anyone fished it recently that could offer any advice? I fancy a change and while Colwick looks interesting i'm not up to rowing for the day.
thanks
grey

Hi (again) greyhoundgirl

I was invited, by a neighbour, to go to Ranskill earlier in the season.
I must say, I hated it! If you fancy a purposely dug, square trout puddle, of a couple of acres, beside the very busy, and noisy, eastern region railway line, then this is the venue for you.

On the day in question a strong, bitterly cold, wind was blowing into the corner nearest the barbed-wire fence. I later learned it was the deepest part of the puddle and one guy ensconced there caught three fish on a heavily weighted lure. The other five anglers blanked!

If you visit during a warm spell of weather no doubt the fish will be in this deeper, cooler water. If it's advice you're looking for then I'd give it a miss.

Bye the way, the fishing at that other venue you visited has been very, very poor.

I agree with Tommy, its an awful place, a small dirty puddle with express trains hurtling past every 10 minutes.

This is my closest venue so I fish it regularly and I really enjoy it, yes to look at it's featureless I admit (but I don't  have much else to work with round here!!) but IMO it's got a lot of character when you get to know it, it's tough on certain days (a wind blowing towards the train line is easterly and typically provides tougher conditions) but the sunken pump in the corner can be a great spot, and a sedge tight up against the thick reeds can be effective, on their day buzzers (particularly black) fished deep and slow can work wonders but you'll quickly know if this isn't right tactic. It also has some spectacular evening hatches where a lot of fish come up up to the surface and a variety of dries will be effective if well presented. Dries in general work well but if it's earlier in the day and no fish are up in the wonder you may have to bide your time, if nothing is on top seek out the deeper water with sinking lines. A damsel along the railway bank can also work well. I only really fish it at weekends and can't recall ever seeing many trains, I guess this may be more of a problem during the week.

Top flies in terms of fish caught for me lately: humungus on int. line (7 last weekend), foam corixa (during a hatch of tiny white buzzers), orange sedgehog, red sedge, black and red okey dokey, White minky, damsel. It may sound obvious but you'll get regular interest if your fly is right, if not don't be afraid to keep chopping and changing tactics.

Although you'll probably read the above and not bother, wouldn't blame you!!!!!!!!
