Default Any fishing near Portlaoise (Ireland)

Hi folks,

I'm hoping that someone can direct me towards some good flyfishing water near Portlaoise.

My missus has booked a hotel there for the weekend and i've got tomorrow to do what i wish... which will be fishing....

The thing is i don't know that part of Ireland at all....

I would prefer wild trout fishing, either in a lake or river.. .I will take my engine with me as we are leaving this evening...

If there is a good river or lake around then great, but if not i am happy enough to chase stocky rainbows or whatever. I will be looking to rent a boat.... Be a nice change from frustrating Corrib Caenis feeders anyhow!!

I would be grateful of any information that you guys have... someone in the midlands may be able to help...

Cheers
JJ

Newbridge is not a million miles from Portlaoise, straight up the motorway to-wards dublin. There u can get access to the mighty liffey, one of the finest trout rivers in the country.

N.K.T.S.A.A - Contacts

Trout around the newbridge part of the fishery are in general not the biggest but it has some beautiful water and easily waded.

Thanks for the info.. I will definately consider the Liffey..

How far is Sheelin from Portlaoise? Would anyone have a contact number for someone renting a boat on Sheelin?

Regards,
JJ

Hope the rain clears JJ!

My local rivers are flooded and as its poured down all day, i wont be flopping a fly rod around for a week by the look of it.......

Hi JJ

For stockies head to Laois Angling Centre | Coarse & Game fishing in Laois, Ireland All bank fishing, no need fror engine..

That's about 20mins down the motorway..

For river fly fishing, get a ticket for Monasterevin and fish the barrow near the town.. They have about 10 miles of fishing, with good access from the roads.

Day tickets can be got at Finlays Tackle Shop, Monasterevin, or better still give the shop a call and they will advise you as to how the barrow is fishing up there. Tel 045 525331..

Hope you have some good fishing...

Regards, Robbie.

Also Mountrath has fishing on the Nore, and Mountrath river.

Delour river has small trout but the river nore would be the best from Kilbricken downstream to new bridge.

Mountrath river has average 10oz trout downstream of Mountrath.

Permits from kellys Tackle Shop, Main Street Mountrath... Again ask in the shop for advice..

Thanks Robbie,
Do you know of any trout lakes about there where i could rent a boat for the day (stockie or wild fish)? The Laoise water looks like a real man made stockie pond which doesn't really attract me all that much...Sorry if i sound a bit hard to please

I'l look into fishing the Barrow... Hopefully the rivers won't be too dirty and swollen....

Cheers
JJ

Another one in Mullingar is Lough Ennell, never fished it but there...

Mullingar, Co. Westmeath

Good trout fishing with good hatches of buzzers, mayfly and sedges, but can be difficult to rise trout at times. The season runs from 1st of March to 12th of October. A Shannon Regional Fisheries Board permit is required and can be purchased online. (3,540 acres 1,434; hectares)

Best Times: April – 12th of October with very good fishing in the last two weeks of the season.
