What percentage compression are you getting?

Most people don't furl tightly enough which leads to a poor leader.

If you're getting it right, the final leader should be at least 25% shorter (getting there is easy, pushing beyond is more difficult) than the unfurled strands. (Many only get a 10-15% compression and, believe me, the difference is enormous. The theoretical perfect furl is a compression of 37% but you'll never get that nor want to.) I have furled as tightly as 32% but am happy if I get 25% or just above.
