Default Caenis

Fishing recently caenis appeared everywhere. Is there a good imitation fly about and where can I buy them. What I was using no use.

You could try the strategy outlined here.

I find it changes things from a thing of pure dumb luck to a workable method that brings reasonably consistent results.

Normally when caenis appear, you struggle to see them, they just too small. Too small to imitate with a fly pattern anyway, so tactics and techniques need to be employed to focus on the fish's instinct for feeding competition. Normally a small emerger, under the surface, with some movement, but every angler has his preferred tactic for the caenis hatch. It's not an east hatch to fish, and it has beaten plenty of people who are a lot better than you and i, so i wouldn't worry too much. It's not called the "anglers curse" for nothing

Try a sparkle gnat or tups

Fish a single fly, taper your leader as fine as you dare, degrease leader every other cast if its a flat calm, watch which way the fish are travelling, aim a good yard in front, I have more success allowing the fish to move onto the fly, its presentation, presentation, presentation................

Yes, it can work. Fishing a caenis hatch, is one of those situations where luck often reigns supreme. Anything can work sometimes, and other times, nothing works...it's a bit of pot luck. The main problem is that the trout tend to be very specific at different stages of the hatch, and with the hatch changing by the minute, developing a consistent startegy is almost impossible. The bst that I have found, is to use a tactic, and fly that has worked in the past, and simply stick with it throughout the hatch. At some stage a fish or two might just go for it. Trout also get very spooky during a caenis hatch, and to put them down is not difficult, so a minimum of line splach is important. Flogging the watr to a froth is going to get you nowhere, but patience will be rewarded.

Are Caenis common to both still waters and rivers?

I have seen a few hatches of tiddly whitish upwinged flies (I assumed Duns) with a tail arching upward on small rivers. Loads of them. Is this caenis?

No, that wouldn't be caenis. When you see fish rising all over the place, apparently to nothing, it's caenis...more than likely. They are so small, that you can't actually see them unless you have really good eyes... which I dont.Mayfly Genus Caenis (Angler's Curses) hatch & pictures

Hmmm...I beg to differ Andreb, caenis commonly hatch on rivers and though they are small, you would have to be blind not to notice them.
