Default braided loop or needle knot? your thoughts

iv jus tied up my first few needle knots and although not perfect they look pretty good, are absolutely solid and look alot more streamlined that a braided loop. im gona try it out over the weekend but I don't think il be going bk to braided loops. alot less resistance and an almost perfect taper. sounds good to me. how does everyone else feel about this

Gone right off braided loops. The sleeves don't go through the rod-rings smoothly. I've had the loops, bought from John Norris, come undone - they need to be super-glued.

I'd rather needle-knot a few inches of 20lb Maxima to the fly-line and tie in a loop.

I use both. I love the Roman Moser minicom loops; fitted properly they're fantastic. I take it you mean Grey's Loop with a needle knot? Also excellent, but I can never get my loop small enough to be 100% happy with it. Any tips??

I'm also fed up with braided loops! I now turn the tip of the line back on itself to form a loop - strip some of the line to expose the cord, pass a suitable darning needle through the line with the stripped line cord through the eye of the needle, to form a nice neat loop, then I whip over the joint to secure it, just apply some fly head cement or varnish to the whipping! Works wonderfully for me! I use a perfection loop to join leader to fly line. Should have used this method years ago, it even beets the conventional needle knot to form a mono loop.

Hi Brifly,

What you want is the Perfection Loop! It is just about perfect!!

I would put up a link but the few pages I have looked at do not illustrate it very well so maybe try a YouTube video if you are interested. Its dead easy but the illustrations make it look otherwise - even I find them hard to follow and I can tie it with my eyes shut (well . . . . ok . . . . maybe a wee peak!).

Good luck,

Andy

I thought I was the only one using that method Mostyn, it loop to loops beautifully with a furrled leader and runs easily through the rings ,I find a tiny drop of wader repair ointment works well on the whip finish. PJ
