Default Need a really good floatant for a long dry drift

Hi All

I've been trying to drift a dry fly a long way under a very wide bridge.

So far this has proved beyond the ability of the woeful Lureflash Superfloat liquid (hey, it was cheap!)

So . . . to treat line and fly do I use Watershed or some sort of powder (e.g. E-Zee Dust'N'Dry)?

The fish are feeding like mad off the top and right now I don't care if the best product makes the ****** fly float an inch ABOVE the surface film, I just want one those splashy splashy trout!!

C'mon lads (and lasses?) HELP ME

Try watershed and let it dry overnight.

Thanks.

There seems to be TWO products called Watershed:

WATER SHED PRE FISHING FOR FLIES TYING LEADERS AND LINE | eBay UK

Halstead & Hartley Watershed | eBay UK

Any idea which I want? And will it do line as well as flies?

Damn this fly fishing lark is confusing!

I have found dilly wax excellent, especially when I use it in conjunction with 'Frogs Fanny', (Lathkill do a product called 'Toads Tush' which is meant to be the same but cheaper). Flies float really well and if pulled under usually bob right up again. If you try using the combo in a glass of water at home you will see that when partially submerged the FF creates a lovely bubble effect around the fly. I was trying to drown a shipmans that I had obviously treated rather too well using this method, to get it subsurface the other night and just couldn't sink the thing.

Hi Revo could it be that the fly itself is not buoyant enough to hold up on the surface? If the pattern has insufficient hackle or its tied on too heavy a hook no amount of floatant will keep it on the surface for long.

Just a thought.

Are you presenting downstream?

If so it is more likely that the fault lies in drag rather than the bouyancy of the fly. Get the line under control and you have a chance. Failing that, get downstream of the fish and cast up to them.

Hi
I have Dilly wax and Gink- both never let me down. (even when pulled under by those alien stocked bows). When the temp is cooler, gink seems to get thicker and harder to get out of the bottle whereas dilly wax always seems more fluid like.

Cheers

I fish streams that have some extremely fast runs; and it's very difficult to keep the fly afloat! (Richard! No one fishes a dry fly down stream) while retrieving the line after casting up stream dry fly! Then someone gave me a fly to try; it was a size 14, tied by an expert competition angler! It floated in all conditions; and there was no need to apply any float-ant throughout the day.

I was told he Uses : Muclin Silicone - coats his dry flies the night before; and allows them to dry!

I was impressed; and I'm definitely going to buy the Muclin Silicone!
