Question Re-ringing a rod?

Not strictly a fly fishing question, but I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction on this? I've got a 1970s glass avon rod which was passed on to me by dad a few years back - it's absolutely perfect for a lot of the fishing I do and has a great action, but to be honest the rings were already nackered when I got it and it's only getting worse. I'm sure I could replace it with a different rod, but it wouldn't be quite the same, and I'm rather attatched to this one , so can I get it serviced/re-ringed? If so where should I get it done and how much would I expect it to cost?

Thanks in advance for any help .

Thanks for the suggestions both . I must admit I've toyed with the idea of doing the job myself, but I'd imagine it's quite time consuming, and I wouldn't trust my big ham fists with such a precious bit of kit - certainly worth considering though.
I might give Sparton tackle a ring - from the website it sounds as if they'd do a good job, but I'd be a bit terrified of putting the rod through the post . Still, needs must and I'm sure it'd be worth it.

Good grief it's hardly rocket science replacing a few rod rings..as long as you get the right rings ( use good quality ones) and whip them correctly and replace them in line, they should last for years.
It's certainly no harder than tying a decent fly!

If you read the post Tony, it's not an old who cares rod. It's precious to the bloke and he wants it done properly. Shame you couldn't be a little more productive with your comments. I personally can't help but others have already offered suggestions.

Good luck with it yorkshirelad.

Kevin, it's not beyond most people to re-whip a rod! I have a Hardy right next to me which belonged to my late father back n the 60's which means a great deal to me and which needs a few rings replacing but I certainly won't be sending it anywhere to get it done!

When my father was alive, we often had to repair our rods and re-whip them and that included split cane rods which often worked loose and far more difficult than replacing a bfew rings so please don't accuse me of being non-productive!
I really don't see the problem... replacing a set of rings is no more difficult than tying a decent fly!

I see your point, but it's not something I've done before, and essentially I don't want to 'have a go' with that particular rod and make an **** of it. If it was one I wasn't that bothered about I'd do it myself, but I just don't trust myself with this one. Cheers for the constructive criticism all the same I guess .

hello i had 1 too an old avon fibre glass 10.5 made in the uk just handed to my fishy son like yours together with an avon reel. he likes barbel fishing so its in good hands for years to come. he is just into flyfishing now and using a fly rod i made when he was 8 now 35. so my advice is try getting some original eyes maybe off ebay or some suitable ones to suite rod take 1 ring off at a time and mark line take your time is not too difficult if your patient. when you finish maybe a new varnish and look at you good work and a big and happy fishing

YL, I assure it wasn't meant as criticism, only a form of encouragement. If you really don't feel capable of doing the job then that is understandable and I don't blame you for wanting someone to do it for you but, it's not difficult and you really couldn't do any harm if you attempted it and got it wrong.

If you do send it off to get it done professionally, select a good rod repair specialist and insist on them using only good quality rings that match the rod as these are the main contact points of the line and it's a fact that poor grade rings can soon corrode and eventually score the line and cause friction which will ultimately affect casting.
