Default What size Rod do I buy ?

Hi all, I am a bit confused with the size of rod I should be using, I am new to fly fishing and have been using a #7-8 10ft rod but after reading some posts on here Im not sure if i should buy a new one as some say to avoid this size.
I dont fish rivers, only lakes, stills & res, would there much difference if i used a smaller rod?

If you are bank fishing, might have been better if was 9 to 9'6" #6 or #7, rod.
If Boat fishing rod is perfect.
Dont fret however, weight rating of rod aint gonna make the catching of the quarry any harder, or easier!
Is the fly on the end, and how its fished, that is important!
regards
bert

If it suits you and you can fish comfortably with it all day then no problem - as aenoon says, it's not the rod that catches the fish !!! Save your money until you're ready to upgrade to a rod that is likely to give you more enjoyment by giving more feel, etc and then reconsider what length best suits your fishing (after having tried a few rods/lengths !!).
Tight lines !! Paul

For bank fishing i normally use a 10ft 8# Platinum XD -gets good distance even with a more open loop(handy with teams of flies) and is able to combat the wind.Your rod should be fine

all the best Nick

Sorry if this has been covered before but why would a 9' - 9'6" 6 or 7 # be better for reservoir bank fishing than a 10' 7-8 weight?

Is it to do with where the fish are likely to be picked up? Closer to the shore or something?

Generally longer rods are used for boat fishing to help with fishing the hang, etc (and help keep your flies out of your boat partners ear!! ) but they can get tiring fishing with them all day. Shorter rods are generally lighter and so are less tiring and if you're fishing the bank you don't usually need the extra length. The issue of line weight is to do with fishing with lighter tackle which tends to make playing a fish a bit more of a challenge (in a good way!!) but you may find it harder to cast the same distance with a lighter weight set up if you're not experienced. You also need to think about balancing the flies you're using with your rod/line - heavier flies (eg lures) need stiffer/heavier weight rods to cast them properly.
Tight lines!!
Paul
