I would have thought that an acid dye will not bond with the slick covered plastic coatings on modern lines. Just my opinion I've never dyed a fly line and wouldn't want to.

I know others that have done it with Rit clothing dye and it worked. guess I should just cut a piece and try it in a very low temp dye bath. the lines are fluro orange and I want to change that or i wont use them... maybe they stay orange and become practice lines.

A couple of sites that might help.

International Fly Fisher

Natural Dyes From Plants - Pioneer Thinking

I have never tried dying a line but having fished a lot in peat stained water with a green aircell I did notice it gradually turned light olive over the years

Cheers Sandy,
Ard has a posting of a nice dye job using Rit so I think I will just go buy some... or experiment with my Veniards or Jacquards dyes.
thanks for the links good reading

I have tried Veniards olive dye on a line, absolutely no effect! Fishtales link to International Fly Fisher looks very promising though, if Rit dye is easily available.
A belt and braces solution could be using a permanent marker pen, even if it's just on the first 10 - 20 yards. I know that when i have marked lines at specific points with a black marker, it stays put.

Actually it appears it will stick just fine. Current thread going on in the US version of this board with detailed instructions on how to do same: Dying a Fly Line; - The North American Fly Fishing Forum

If you want to join in, your log in info should be the same there as here.

Missed your post above mine Darwin; hit the link I just posted up as there's a range of colours (base line+die=what-ever) including bright orange.

I have dyed fly lines with acid dyes no problem. I don't use many veniard dyes but try veniard fl yellow it will dye them. Make sure the fly line is lighter than the colour you want to dye though! And don't get it too hot.
