Default One fly for trout, sea trout & salmon

I read in the July 2011 issue of Fly fishing & Fly Tying that the "Green Machine" is a fly that takes trout, sea trout and salmon.

Have you fished with a Green Machine fly and did you catch more that one species?

Do you know of any other multi-fish flies that can take trout, sea trout & salmon?

Are we talking salt or freshwater or both?

I'm not too convinced about the 'Green Machine' but a GRHE nymph in various sizes is without a doubt the most universal fly for me.

This is a very interesting thread. I was recently fishing the Tweed on a £5 trout ticket and "accidentally" caught a lovely wee springer, right opposite the Ladykirk beat.

Yes, Yes I know its not really PC, but I justified it by the fact that I couldnt afford to pay the tweed salmon prices, all fish would be returned, and so as long as I had a ticket of some sort .........

Well The Ladykirk ghillie was most annoyyed at this and promptly snagged my setup.......... leader too thick and apparently a thunder and lightening on a gold double isnt a brown trout fly!!
Then the water bailif came down and I was threatened with prosecution.

Hand in the air, I accept I was completely in the wrong........ damn good fun though.

So yes, I'm most interested in the troutiest flies folk have used to catch salmon.

In Lewis I've caught or seen caught all three fishes on Mallard and Claret, Claret Bumble, Donegal Blue, Teal, Blue and Silver, Bloody Butcher and all sorts of Muddlers.
On the Annan the Greenwell's Glory took salmon, sea trout, browns and grayling.

I've also had salmon, sea trout and rainbows on a fly of my own, the 'Saint Peter' - essentially a Peter Ross but with a blue dyed Guinea fowl hackle tied in as a wing. No browns yet but I'm sure one will come along soon!

Allan, you can add Steelhead to your list. Pattern is very similar to one we use called "Agent Orange."
