Default Fly line advice

Hi

I've just started using a single hand 10' #8 rod and previously I have always used a 13' double hander with a 'Spey' Line.

Are there other lines I should be considering for the single hand 10' or will the Spey line be as good ?

Thanks

I am a complete double handed novice but my Spey line is Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge in terms of weight and head length compared to my other lines. I wouldn't consder putting it anywhere near my 10ft single hander.

Balance your rod with the recommended line weight usually displayed on the rod near the handle. If it's a 7/8# I'd use the eight.

Sorry to be a bit dim, but are we saying 9# spey line can be used on a single hander (rated #9) just as effectively?

Thanks for the replies guys.

My question is really related to the fact that my rod is rated #8 but my Spey line rated #8 does not reach its optimum performance (as far as I am aware) until the line out reaches the second colour. In this case that amount of line is way too much distance for the river I am fishing and so I guess that despite it being #8 - like my rod - it will not be performing at its best because there will not be enough line out?

If my thinking is correct then should I be looking for - for example - not a 'spey' line but maybe a WF #8 ? What I'm saying is that I need a line that will work my rod with a short distance of line out - say 30' max - and I believe a spey line needs more line out to be effective.
