Default Flies for stillwaters

I would add Black Buzzers to your list together with some small Damselfly nymphs. I also like the GRHE, but the ones without the thorax (never caught consistantly on the other type). Shipman's Buzzers are also useful and sometimes the Black & Peacock Spider can work well.

I used to use Frazer Nymphs a lot some years ago but I don't think I have any at the moment ....

Diawl Bach. Works all year. Takes stocked and wild. In my experience, best with a hot orange head.

I would put Buzzers at the top of the list. They are the one food item that is available all of the season and there will be a hatch at some time every day. Black is the most useful but have a couple of the red and green ones in your box and perhaps a silver/orange for early season.
On those occasions when you can see fish quietly sipping off the surface but cannot see what it is they are taking the chances are it will be hatching Buzzers. A suspender buzzer, cul-de-canard (CDC) or foam float type, will usually take fish then.
I would never be without a Bibio in the box, fished wet or dry, as this will be taken for a number of terrestrials, hatching Buzzers and snails and will catch when the Hawthorn and Heather flies are on the water.
A couple of Olive imitations, Greenwells wet and dry, and a couple of Sedge patterns, deer hair dry flies and various sizes of Invicta, and you will be set up for most situations.

Dave.

I'd never be without a gold head damsel , if all else fails the good old damsel comes out and invariably picks up a fish or two regardless of conditions.

Other faves are buzzers (i've never had much luck with black ones but always do well with yellow or green ones ),okay doakys and for rising fish a muddler or sedge.

Default Buzzers

In hook sizes 20 to 4 curved, straight and circle. Black, olive, red, brown, grey, orange the list is endless but black and olive would be my first 2 choices.
