Default Cannot catch on drys

Hi fishing the other night and a few fish were rising to i think sedges.
tried a few different drys but no takers.
I later asked one of the old hands and asked him what he would have used.
He said without hesitation that he would have used a goldhead.
I asked him how he would fish the g/h and he said to.
Cast out to the rising trout let the g/h sink and then retrieve in a slow rise and fall motion, vary the speed and they should take.
have not been back to try it yet does it sound feasible to you all.

What type of water are you fishing?

Hi Disco Duck

It is always better to try to match the fly on the water with a dry imitation first. If this dosen't work you can always try buzzers or a pheasant tail nymph.
For the PTN cast near the rise but not over it and retrieve with a slow figure of eight. The gold head bead on the suggested nymph would mean it sank quicker and needed a quicker retrieve to may it rise and fall.

Just because you could see the sedges flying about doesn't mean the trout were taking the adult insect. They may have been feeding on the hatching insects or nymphs just under the surface hence you could still see disturbance on the water. If sedges are on the water but the rise forms are "swirls", i'd say they were taking emerging nymphs and try a sedge pupae on the point with an invicta on the dropper. The rise to adult sedges tend to be a lot "splashier" and imo this is when to try a dry imitation.

When the fish are moving like that, they are feeding in numbers, and concentrating on the food. I doubt they are even aware of a tippet, and if they are, they don't register what it is. The reason why trout don't eat things, is because they don't think it was food. So, there must have nbeen something in the manner that the fly was behaving, to discourage the trout from eating eat, but is a small stocked stillwater, i doubt a sinling or floating tippet, or a 3 pound or 12 pound tippet, would have made any difference.
There might gave been the case of a poor presentation or something, to chase the fish away from eating your fly.
