Default Any ideas please?

Casting practice on the Coquet today near Rothbury. Fishing from the bank, just downstream of a weir, I saw a 'shadowy' fish some 12" to 15" long swimming towards the weir about 4' from the bank. It appeared to have a darkish body with a white front end/head and I saw it 3 times in the space of 30 minutes. What might it be?

Thanks

The local bailiff thought it might have been a diseased salmon.

Thanks

Fish can look like this when they have fungus!!! so maybe he was right, especially if it was rather lathargic (not sure on spelling )

low water and high temperatures can cause saprolagenia to infect salmonids trout/salmon is white and looks much like cotton wool often seen on the head of the fish although it can break out anywhere on the body.
The fish become lethargic and at times seems to cruise aimlessly around the pool.
Fresh healthy fish rarely lye with diseased fish.

Possibly a fish suffering from 'columnaris' ( I think?) - a disease I saw quite a lot of in migratory fish in the River Wear over 40 years ago.
Fish suffering from it would as part fo the symptoms, often develop a whitish patch which usually covered the head.

During the late runs, you could see salmon suffering from it in the upper reaches of the River Wear in the deeper pools swimming around and it was always the light patch you'd notice first.

From what I could gather at the time, if it is that disease then fish suffering from it can readily infect other fish and would be better caught and killed.
