Default The Least Important Piece Of Tackle?

The reel! If I was going to spend as little as possible on one particular item, this would be it.

The *expensive* rod: an even bigger con than glasses frames

The tackle you leave at home, while your out fishing! think about it! "Your out on the water with all the tackle you need! ergo the least important piece of tackle is? IMHO, whatever you've left at home.

The description that I have recently seen of the "French" method makes me wonder if a fixed-spool reel could be used !!!

I agree. The French are the least important.

The reel - but aren't the nice ones irresistable? There's something about a neat piece of engineering ....

Rod and reel are both not essential and if you fish in the manner of the Macedonians you don't need a fly line either.

I think everyone is in agreement, it's the reel. But we all like our shiny reels. The most i'll spend is around £250 on one.
