Hey,

This is from the thread tangles droppers, I noticed while watching that thread devolop it has been mentioned about tying a half hitch to the dropper knot to reduce tangles.

Do you tie the half hitch from the (point fly) dropper line to the reel end? The one I normally cut off?

Also, would doing this muchly weaken the dropper knot?

Sorry if its confusing but im a little confused myself.

Cheers,

After you've tied the dropper knot (e.g. water knot) then you half hitch the dropper not the point. It makes the dropper stand out perpendicular.
I use a blood knot which ties a perpendicular knot so don't need a half-hitch. The standard recommendation is to use the line pointed towards your point for the dropper, so would be keen to know from the people that use it which piece of line they use as their dropper and if it changes based on whether they use a half-hitch or not.

so tying a knot in the dropper line has to make it much weaker? You see, it sounds a good idea but id rather undo a few tangles than start losing flies because of knots in my line?

Sorry if im sounding dumb lol just trying to understand

It's not dumb to ask questions you don't know the answer to. Not asking is dumb
As long as it is wetted and tightened appropriately it shouldn't significantly weaken the overall knot. Many people use it very successfully.

Hi Pawprint,

Have a look at this link. Hopefully it should clear things up for you. I use this all the time with no problems.

How to tie a tucked water knot

Hope this helps.

Tight lines!

Nick.

Cheers for that nick! the only problem, I read it till the end and found:

"Moisten and gently draw tight. NOTE: This tucked knot suits standard mono and not fluorocarbon."

I use fluorocarbon or do people still use this with fluoro?

Pawprint,

Yes, just read that! Didn't see that the first time!

I only use fluro and have never had a breakage or problem whilst doing this. I'm not going to change anything in my set up cos it works well. My cousin uses a drop of Loon UV knot sense on all his knots to strengthen them for extra confidence.

cheers,

Nick.

Hello Pawprint

I do not like the idea of a half hitch where the fish is going to pull it.I know folks do it and are fine with it but not for me.

I have found the Figure Of Eight dropper knot to be bullet proof with all leader materials I use.I do half hitch the tag above the dropper knot before trimming it tight. Not sure it is necessary but I guess I picked it up along the way.
There is a Step by Step by the Knot Professor on this site. You need to watch it through as in two parts where he ties a FO8 loop first and then the dropper knot.
