Default Rio midge tip/Cortland ghost tip

Going to buy a sink tip line and never used 1 before. Was wondering if anyone could give me any info on lines mentioned and also if anyone could help me with what length of sinking section is most popular. Quite lost on what to go for so any help is much appreciated.

Hi. I have been using Airflow Midge tip / Mini tip lines for several years. The intermediate section is only 3 foot, which may sound insignificant - but it enables you to use, say, a 15 foot leader with two or three small flies, whereas an 18 foot leader on a floating line would be more difficult to turn over. I find them particularly useful for nymph & wet fly fishing where the water is clear, as fish are less likely to be spooked by the fly line.

Incidentally, I prefer to dispense with the supplied loop and attach my leader directly to the intermediate section as the loop looks pretty ghastly when being drawn in a foot under the surface between the much less visible intermediate section and the leader. (I do this with all lines as loops can form wakes, etc., but I feel it is particularly important with sink tip lines.)

I can only comment on the one Rio Midge Tip i have had and it was terrible. Never again. Horrible to cast, landed on the water like a fish supper and memory like iv never seen before. My mate took it off my hands and says the same, he binned it i think. Id say Cortland if its between the two. I havent used a Pirate sink tip (i dont really use a sink tip) but iv heard nothing but good about them, well worth a look.

I have used a Rio midge tip on and off for the last couple of seasons.

I have found it helps fill the void between a floating line and intermediate and is quite usefull. I generally use it when its to windy to control flies how I want to on a dedicated floating line in crosswinds, I definitely slows the drift and helps with the control but the rest of the head and running line still floats so if the crosswind gets too strong then it will still drag and affect presentation and control. For the purpose of fishing nymphs in mild wind I rekon its a good buy as I find it casts better acroos the wind and into a mild headwind, the downside for me is the running line can seem to produce mythical tangles at times and its not the most subtle of lines landing on shallow water as it can if cast poorly(quite alot with me sometimes) land with quite a splash.

Hello Bigal

What do you want this line to do ? I have a Cortland 15' clear ghost tip and it casts and fishes well although not used very often to be honest. You mention midge tip so maybe you are looking at a shorter clear or otherwise intermediate tip. In this case maybe check out the snowbee.Boom is right as some of these lines have a pronounced kick when casting them.

Another vote from me for a Pitsford Pirate midge tip, but then I would say that as I caught my reservoir PB rainbow from Sutton Bingham when using the line in 2010

Steveow sets out the uses of such a line quite nicely above. Frankly, I prefer using a midge tip to a slow intermediate line anyway, but that's just me.

Been using the Cortland 444SL 5' Ghost tip for pulling trads a lot this season. It casts and handles well.....,I like the wee bit extra curve the tip gives you on the lift....
