Default Best shooting/running line for a Shooting head ??????

Edit: Actually thinking about it I guess what head is being used doesn't have much bearing on this so therefore what shooting lines do you use and why ??

Wasn't sure where to post this but ..

Anyone tell me what shooting lines they use with T-11 and T-14 and why ?? Except for Rio's own shooting lines .

I want a floating one really as that will best suit what I intend to use it for ( don't ask !! ) but at a push some sort of neutral or slow inter will do ...

Cheers .

I dont know much about shooting heads etc but I have used bario line run of the mill floater for a couple of seasons and this year have used one of his GT something or others and I cant believe the way it flies. Probably way off the mark but Im impressed anyway.

Thanks for the reply but the thing is the T-11 and T-14 are heavy fast sinking heads at 8 ips and 9 ips respectively that are then attached to the shooting/running line of choice .

I think you are talking about complete standard type lines yes ?? Interesting all the same though as keep hearing his lines mentioned so might well have a look see at them for my more usual fishing situations .

Thanks again anyway for the reply and was most likely my OP that wasn't very clear

I'm no expert at all, but have been experimenting recently with shooting heads. Not sinking yet, but I imagine that by the fact your after a shooting line the physics remain the same...... Lack of friction = distance.
The rio running line is a good choice as it doesnt tangle so much but 20lb black amnesia mono is fantastic. you need to stretch it as you pull it off the reel to reduce tengles..... but tangles you'll get!!!! along with huge distance when it doesnt.
I just cant get the head to land straight and delicate.......... more work required on my part

Having tried a few backing lines for shooting heads if i read you post correctly, its the actual line behind the head you wanted to know about?

Anyway 20lb amensia in yellow works best for me (colour yellow tangles less apparently according to my locals). For pure distance you cannt beat it.

For general nice fish ability and slight more expensive is braided nylon backing ie tube shaped. Mullakeys here is the best as its springy and not limp. (Forget the limp stuff for distance work as it locks solid.) This has to my personal fav as it doesnt tangle half as much as amenisa and fig8ing is great. Also untangling factor this stuff scores highly and if u playing with shooting heads you will get them

Airflo polly shoot. Does what it says on the tin. Not sure if they make it anymore. Works well but the most expensive option is the negative also to nail knot it using the core to the head is a tricky job, to get a seemless link. Lost a few heads with this stuff too due to snapping. (you cannt knote it using the full coating and nylon core). Overall works fine.

There are couple others i have tried ie flate mono etc but the top 3 above is kinda what i always ended up buying again.

Straight ish you might get , delicate you will never , its just the nature of the beast , due to all that weight being in one lump with no nice taper .......

I guess if I was too go back to slinging dead budgies and blackbirds into 80 foot of Datchet resser ,like I spent several seasons doing back in the late 70s .
I would be using stren or similar on a very large arbour reel, probably around 30lb bs .
Recently been using salmon shooting heads with some rio shooting line in an orange colour works well ,but not casting /paying out vast lengths of line as was the nessecity to hit the bottom feeding fish in the concrete bowl near Heathrow.
A chat with Steve Parton ,would be very helpful if you need advice from a practicing deep water fisherman with huge experience ,dam fun to chat too as well, shame he is giving up retailing soon.

Danny .just a memory ,I found that by having say 15 ft of hollow braid just behind the shooting head, connected to the backing ,it was far easier to haul and grip with wet cold hands .Think it also helped turnover in the level head.
That was using lead core ,lead wire in a braided outer which seemed to be varnished,The modern t11 and T 14 looks some what more used friendly.
