Default Fags and fishing

I'm not clutching at straws here, honestly, but I would like some feed back regarding smokers and catch rates. I'm basically looking at whether residual tobacco aroma on the hands/clothing/tackle has an adverse effect on catching fish.
And if it has..........I'm stopping tomorrow!

I though I saw a slight increase after giving up last year but not so sure now still have hard days (thats catching fish and missing a Fag) worth giving up though me and my misses now save £50 a week and that is paying for the new car

If you give up you can spend the money you save on better tackle and fishing aids that may well improve your catch rates-and you wont miss takes while grubbing around for fags and lighting up

good luck if you try giving up Nick

Hi Brifly
I've done a bit of a study on smells that get passed on to leaders and flies. There is irrafutable evidence that smells effect fish, turning them on or off, both for salmon and trout.I've just reported in another thread that petrol has a devastating effect turning trout off. Scented soap and aftershave is another. I cannot definately say that the smell of stale tobacco is as bad as the previously mentioned products but let's put it this way it can't help. However, thousands and thousands of successful anglers smoke so stale tobacco aroma can't be that bad.

5.6 trillion cigarette buts get thrown away every year and fishermen tend to flick them into their fishing water. Trout have propably got a nicotine adiction from swallowing them.

An angler has reported here that a lady put her hands in a salmon run and the fish carried on. A male angler did the same and the fish stopped. Maybe he was a heavy smoker?

There was a thread about this a while ago. I smoke and as far as I am aware it does not affect my catch rate. I fish with two regular partners, both non smokers and I out fish them 9 times out of 10.

In my experience, yes it's a filthy habit but it does not affect my fishing.

No, the smell does not affect your catch your rate, and neither does putting your rod down to light a fag.... for every fish I might miss when doing so, I get another because the flies have fished that little bit deeper

Same thing here.............I've not noticed a detrimental effect. I gave up for a couple of years and didn't seem to catch any more..........birdsnest

I don't smoke myself, but have known many good anglers that have.
Heard many tales of trout taking cig ends.
Also agree with Black Knight.
I also wonder how we catch fish when using floatants and sinkants, some taste gross (not that I am in the habbit of tasting such).
I used to fish with a mate, I out fished him every time even when we swopped tackle. May have been his casting or such but I thought more to different natural body chemicals.
