Default Help please! What's this an imitation of?

Found recently in a nice 3lb fish from Hazel Copse which I caught on a small buzzer (along with about 2 feet of tippet )...

Click the image to open in full size.

I'm trying to match the hatch & need some advice.
Thanks in advance!

Looks like a egg fly. I've never seen one so dark though. Maybe a bog biscuit fly for carp?

From a close up examination of the pic the fly appears to be made of some sort of foam or pom pom superglued to the hook

Cool!
So a trip to Pets At Home is all I need to match the hatch, or even create my own.

Out of the box thought, it might be a snail imitation

I'd say this was a brown egg fly designed to imitate a trout pellet.

Trout pellet imitation, the one stillwater I go to automatically bans anyone caught using them! Basically an egg fly such as is used for steelhead in the U.S. but in brown to imitate the natural food of a stockie. I've also caught a trout sporting a waterside imitation of a trout pellet made by removing the filter of a smoked cigarette and impaling it on a bare hook then coloring it with a pen. I was a little bit surprised when I found that, "Fly", hooked on the opposite side of the jaw from my nymph.
