Default Melted mucilin...

Being extremely hot yesterday, as my sunburn will attest my mucilin (red and green) have both melted and pooled in their tubs.

Does anyone know if this will affect their composition or the way they "work"? Have I got to buy new tubs, or just warm the old with a hair dryer to get it usable again?

I have tins that are thirty/forty years old and have been melted and frozen dozens of times over that period and they still work fine. Put the tin on a level surface and warm it gently and then let the melted contents settle. When you open the lid it will be level again. Remove the pad while the contents are liquid though or it gets stuck in the middle when it all goes solid again

I have had similar experiences with Mucilin and I have applied gentle heat to make it melt to fill the container and then put it in the fridge. My Mucilin has lasted for years and the melting and solidifying process doesn't seem to have affected it too much.

The red is a floatant that I use on flies, leaders and fly line. I think the green is also a floatant but is for the fly line. I have never used it so I'm not sure.

Good question 'red vs green.' Couldn't remember, but there is a difference. One with, one without Silicon? That said, something tickled my brain about NOT using the product on regular fly lines. Found it: Dan Blanton TLC For Fly Lines

I keep reading that Fred but after using it on lines I haven't noticed any real difference and I can have lines for years before I replace them. Lines loose plasticiser anyway between heat, cold and sunlight and it can't be replaced by a line dressing only during manufacture so the lines will crack over time anyway.

Red Mucilin was manufactured for waterproofing silk lines, leaders, and flies I bought my first tin over fifty years ago. Green Mucilin is still the best natural floatant available today, specially formulated for PVC fly lines. The difference is that Green has Silicon mixed in and Red doesn't. Word of caution I have never read if the Red Mucilin is safe on plastic lines.
