Default Sedge pupa - gentle takes?

Tough but ultimately successful evening fishing tonight.

On one slowish moving patch, the trout were getting busier and busier as evening went on. Verrry hard to catch, and my casting and leader make up probably werent great either.

The trout were making very gentle rises....mostly kissing i thought, so i tried tiny black things, then dry spiders that sit it the surface film, etc. I didnt see any spinners about, and i dont really have any spinner patterns.

I had seen the first few sedges of summer, so tried an dry cdc sedge successfully, then caught another nice one on a cdc pupa.

I was surprised, because i had always read the sedge rises were splashy and aggressive.

Presume this is not always the case? Any advise on this....maybe they werent feeding on sedge and i just got lucky?

hi spider, trout normally sip down the sedge pupa as it rises up to the surface, the pupa gets caught in the surface film, the trout have no need to splash at them , same for the emergers , you will see the trout head and tail gracefully on them ,
plenty of sedge up at the moment,

I doubt they were feeding on sedge pupa, which I believe move quite fast. It sounds like they were possibly feeding on spent dries, or something stuck in the surface film, if you could hear them sipping.

It a shame that, these days, very few anglers seem to spoon their catch - the evidence is irrefutable.

Hi Spider, if you have access to iTunes.

There is an Orvis podcast by Tom Rosebauer, look up "6 tips for emergers".

Well worth a listen.

I always release my trout unless they have been badly injured or something, so i never spoon them.

Hobble, its the first time i've read that trout take sedge pupa in a gentle way?

I wish i had swapped to the pupa earlier, but its my first time seeing and sedge sine last year. Had the takes been splashy, i'd have tried the tactic earlier.

Maybe some sedge pupa swim faster tha others ?

Thinking about it, although the water was miving, enough to cause drag, the surface was mirror like, so maybe the poor sedge pupa were getting stuck in the meniscus ?

If it was slow moving water my bet would be spinners, most sedge activity in my experience will take place on the riffly water or run off / run in to riffly water.
Slow flat water is tricky no matter what they are taking.

Yes spider on the loughs, trout can take in the most gentle of ways with a noisy "sip", or head and tail as they sup up the emergers, or the mad splashes thats associated with them chasing the sedges across the water,

ALSO SPIDER LIKE YOURSELF I PUT MY TROUT BACK, WHY SPOON A TROUT IF YOU HAVE JUST CAUGHT ONE ON THE INSECTS THEIR FEEDING ON??

But how would you ever know what they were really feeding out without the evidence - supposing I catch two or three fish on a Cat's Whisker?

I'm afraid I have to agree with Chris Ogborne when he says in his book, ADVANCED STILLWATER FLYFISHING: "For me, the marrow scoop is such an important item of equipment that I would be tempted to class it as essential tackle"

"Firm and positive evidence is exactly what the marrow scoop provides, it removes the ifs and buts and maybes, and offers the angler irrefutable evidence of what the fish has been eating prior to it's capture."

ok tommy i take your point but your talking about rainbow trout, farmed fish i guess from the fly you quoted "cats whisker",
2 or 3 trout and your doing fantastic if they were wild brown trout, no need to spoon them ,
just take the hook out and release them,
A DEAD WILD BROWN TROUT CANNOT SPAWN,
