10.000 fish in a pool!!
I had a drive over to a friends today, to dicuss tactics for a day on Ullswater tomorrow, on the way I drive over a small river called the Lyvennet, a tributary of the Eden.
I always stop and have a nose over the bridge, well you do don't you.?
The river is very low and clear, and at the moment not even 10ft wide at this point.
Upstream lay a decent trout of approx 1lb, behind him another around 3/4lb then a third about 1/2lb then a quarter pounder, all in a perfect row, just how it should be.
On the downstream side was another 1lb trout, and a 1/2lber behind him, to the right, close to the bank were two eels, and scurrying accross the bed was a native crayfish.
I then noticed a dark patch to my right in a small back eddy which was moving, and on closer inspection, it was heaving, and I mean heaving with fry.
Plenty of fry in the stream as well, but the trout weren't interested, in fact they weren't interested in anything, just happy to sit finning in the water and look good.
I had my little 7footer in the boot, but it was red hot, and I don't think they would have taken a fly anyway, the water is gin clear, and low at the moment.
I arrived at my friends which is approx 1 mile further upstream, and his house is right on the river.
I always have a look off the stone bridge there as well, and spotted a very good fish touching 2lbs upstream and a pounder below.
Great to see so many healthy creatures in such a short distance.
Note to self, NEXT time take a camera!!!
