Question Essex venues - any stretches of trout river?

Hi there,

I was looking to find out if there were any stretches of trout river fishing water within Essex. (Based Billericay).

I head over to Hanningfield for resevoir type fishing, Rib Valley for somthing smaller and occasionally the Crouch and Blackwater for Bass saltwater fly fishing, but I was also looking to add a small river type venue for trout.

I've not had much luck in tracking anything down that's within essex as yet.

Any recommendations for an enthusiastic novice?

If it's all a bit of a lost cause on the trout front for Essex river fishing, I can be persuaded to try for other species where fly fishing is suitable / allowed if anyone can point me in the right direction..

Many thanks!
Douglas

Hi Douglas, There is a club on the upper Cam near Saffron Walden that has some brown trout fishing, but the season is closed now. If you want details for next season give us a shout.

I'm based in billericay too and the river pant sounds interesting, but I have a few questions:

1) as this is a river, does that mean I will need a "migratory" fishing licence???

2) I'm told the southern section is free, located in the braintree area, is the lower section really worth trying - or a waste of time????

3) has anyone fished it recently, if so are thare many trout or is it a waste of time for fly fishing??? any particular areas that I should head for????

I looked at it on google maps, and I must say it looks real nice.

No, your regular coarse and non-migratory licence will be just fine.

FWIW, I'm intrigued to learn about this river too. Although I live at the other end of the country these days, I'm often down in Chigwell seeing my mum. I'm sure she'd get a few more visits next year if I was to discover a bit of decent river trout fishing nearby!
