Hi buddy.

i think most people have thier own way to fish buzzers. The method i have found very successful is to have a long leader around 15ft and fish with 2 buzzers.

I fish them on a floating line and have the 2 buzzers 5 feet apart.

After i cast i let all the leader sink then i start a slow figure of 8 which consists of a jerk maybe every 5 secs. This jerk makes the buzzer rise and fall suddenly and for some reason the fish seem to hammer the buzzer as it falls back down.

Buzzer fishing is something i have found very hard also.

Andy

Buzzer fishing is very skillful and beginners find it a hard way to catch fish. You realy need to fish with someone who is an acomplished buzzer fisherman and watch and learn.

As above - slow figure-of-eight or a slow, smooth 2 foot long pull, then allow to sink for 30 seconds & repeat. The latter is called the sink & draw method & is generally my favourite.

The sink and draw method a friend of mine uses and he is very successful with it.

Hi Rocko

Steve's and expert with a very famous father David Coller who designed the Ace of Spades matuka streamer lure.

Every time his name comes up on this Forum I remember my early fly tying days and being taught to tie some of David's patterns which are just as deadly today.

Do a search on here rocko, plenty of info in old posts. Good advice so far and if you can spend time at your local with someone who has cracked it that will help. Also fish your buzzers round the breeze/ripple on the water, no retrieve needed but the draw as already said helps. Imitates the buzzer assent in the water column. Good detail in 'My Way With Trout' by Arthur Cove and 'Mastering the Nymph' by Gordon Fraser.
Cheers,
Mark

Thanks BK but I'm hardly an expert. I started in 1981 & now only go out about 20 times a year & didn't fish at all between 1990 & 2009!
I do use buzzers a lot though & tried to soak up all the information I could about fly-tying & fishing from my father.

He was always adaptable to change & sometimes used buzzers in conjunction with strike indicators on very calm, sunny days when trout were particularly fussy.
Back in the 1960's & 70's he advocated greasing the leader right up to the buzzer & watching for takes in or just under the surface film.
I can tell you that he had an abrupt change of mind about this & never greased the leader to the fly right through the 1980's.
Unfortuantely, this outdated advice is still in print, in Fly Dressing & Robson's Guide for instance. It's misleading to say the least!

Sound advice on the larger waters where the wind sets up currents and the naturals drift on them. On the small trout puddles where the water is relatively static you may have to resort to float-fishing to present a more static buzzer at feeding depth, just twitching the float occasionally.
