Default Bites?

In over thirty years of fly fishing I have never had a "bite". "Takes" and "rises" by the thousand but never a "bite" and niether has anyone else! I have had thousands of "bites" while ledgering and trotting
In the long and rich history of fly fishing literature you will not find the word bite used in the context of a fish taking a fly. So can we please try to stamp out the use of the word bite on the forum?
I don't care if you use a bung or indicator, a brown WF floater or an orange DT, a Klinkhammer or a Kite's Imperial, underline or overline, cast tailing loops or narrow ones, use flurocarbon or nylon, cast upstream or down or even fish for rainbow trout just DON'T WRITE OR SAY BITE!

I recognise exactly where you're coming from Westcountry but ... we have to realise that in recent years 'fly fishing' has become a trendy thing to do and has attracted many anglers from different disciplines where 'bite' is the word.

Many newcomers to fly fishing have yet to acquire the vocabulary of fishing with a fly and it would be a sad day if we were to discourage them for their lack of suitable expression. However, mention 'bite' in three successive posts and I agree ... eternal damnation!

Take, rise or even sip. Only a newbie or coarse convert would use the term 'bite' in association with a trout taking a fly.

Good grief!!.....Fly fishing trendy?....

Nope I have never thought it trendy......I did once think it was the preserve of the rich and shameless spoon fed ponsonmbys middle /upper classes who thought they were above all other anglers but never Trendy. I have however been educated in these matters and thank god for Anglian water etc for making fly fishing available to us mere wanna be trendy,s mortals.

I do however now know better. Fly fishing is just another branch of a very varied and what should be classless sport/passtime/hobby.

I have spent 30 plus years fishing for many species, I only have have fly fished for a couple of years, how shocking I mean I have not even had time to buy any tweed breeks!!!

I have called a Bite from a fish many things ie a pull, take, touch, enquiry, bite, run, knock, bang, hit etc but never realised offence could be taken at calling a take from a Trout a bite.

I in fact only started fly fishing after being constantly pestered by a friend to try it and I am glad I did, it is wonderfull and I wish I tried it sooner, never thought it trendy tho?

A lot of skilled and very competant coarse/specimen anglers now fly fish as another way of enjoying the diverse sport of angling and some are very good at it as they can employ watercraft learnt in other areas of the sport.

Also many of us lowly trend needing specimen anglers have tried and embraced fly fishing as a way to learn and experience something new, whilst being able to goto new venues. get away from the overpopulated, oversold, overadvertised coarse and specimen, otter infested angling venues.

Trendy??

Come back same time next week and we will argue about the proper shades of tweed jackets and how to properly display a roll of toilet paper.

I think we should not call a fly cast, a "cast " anymore. I think perhaps we should call it something else, but I don't know what.
Two reasons why I say this, firstly, the word "cast" is too reminiscent of what anglers do in other forms of fishing. They cast bait rods, coarse rods, etc etc, and I don't want to be associated with those kind of people from other angling disciplines..... the second reason, is that most fly anglers, when they say that they are "casting", are doing something else... like hurling a flyline though the air in a very untidy and undignified manner, with all kinds of ung0dly loops and twists and tangles...... definatly not casting. Some even overline their rods... others use furled leaders... and we are expected to call it casting... no no... If they are "casting", I don't want to be seen to be doing that....
Ha ha...(this is a joke in case the "mother grundies" think I'm serious)
