Default Fishing around Keswick??

Evening all,

A good friend of mine is heading up to Keswick for a weeks camping and they were wondering if anyone had any good tips on venues?

Are there any stocked rainbow waters around or any easily accessable wild brownie waters that you would recomend?

Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

Hi,

Have a look at this link. You can search for venues anywhere in the lakes and by type e.g stocked, wild, river etc.

where to fish

Some places are free e.g some hill tarns. I haven't fished much in the lakes but have been to Watendlath twice and absoloutely love it. Fantastic scenery and good fighting fish. Boats available too if wanted. Good spot is opposite the lodge/house next to the stream running into the tarn. Had 3 in 3 casts there two years ago on intermediate line with damsel.

Hope this helps.

Nick.

You must go to Watendlath fishery it's a gem. The road to it is a bit tricky so be careful. It's single track most of the way with occassional passing places.

Chickenfish - Ive just got back from a week in Keswick, had some fishing planned but the weather beat me at every turn - we had a lot planned so I had to be pretty strict on the days I planned to go out and it was pretty much unfishable on those days with gales and driving rain (and it takes a lot to stop me fishing!). Gutted but ill be back.

From my research prior to going and what I saw you could fish the Derwent that runs through Keswick, start at the bridge in the centre of town and work your way downstrea, see Keswick Angling Association, Cumbria The Lake District for all the details. As mentioned above Watendlath Tarn is about 20 mins drive from Keswick and is a lovely spot, if you fancy a bit of of wild fishing you can walk from Watendlath to Blea Tarn (takes about 40 mins and is a fair hike), supposed to be good wild brown fishing.

I managed to get up to Watendlath one evening to see what it was like for the next trip, the photo below shows how nice a spot it is (cost is £23 4 fish 9-5 ticket, £18 4 hour 2 fish ticket):

Snap! - we go every year for a week and were also up there but once the storms set in on Sunday night right through Monday and rivers came several feet up we quit and headed south to Herefordshire Monnow area - had some great fishing and weather as reported on Monnow thread. Agree with Watendlath for stocked stillwater, or better still the rivers Greta and Derwent on Keswick Anglers ticket, available from Tourist Info in the town. Best beat of the Derwent is from the bridge above the town, accessible from the layby and footpath off the carlisle road. Failing that, the next beat below, by the Derwent Hotel and the fancy suspension footbridge. If you do park at the dead ended road there be aware that there is a t0$$er (from the hotel??) who seems to consider the road his own private property and puts fake parking tickets on car windscreens sometimes. Did it to me last time, I was fuming, went up to remonstrate but no one would come to the door. Nothing to worry about really, ignore them as they are not real tickets, and you ARE allowed to park there, it just wound me up as I didn't know that until someone told me afterwards.

Oohh Jeff, not like you, such a placid fella.
Nothing to add to all this good info chickenfish, except to agree that Watendlath is worth the effort, and for some reason the trout in it, fight well beyond their weight, bit like our Jeff really.

Yeah, the blue trout in W'lath last year certainly pulled your string a bit, don't know if they still stock them. The fish are very free rising too so dries and emergers work well, although the fish do switch on and off through the day. Grab a boat if one's free, as its a definite advantage - the fish soon move out of range of bank angling once they see a few casts (although if you stop casting and sit down for 10 mins they will come back in). Let the short anchor rope out and drift down the lake til the mudweight anchor hits bottom as you approach the bank, then repeat. Hang on to your rod as they hit those dries like express trains

jcwarn - thats a pity..! Did you manage to fish blea tarn though..?? Looks like the photo you took was from the top of the very steep hill to the left of the fishery as though you were on your way there..?. I'm gonna be up there middle of july, and hope the weather holds. Blea is first on my list, then Tarn as Leaves, then gonna make my way towards goats water and if i'm lucky might get a char

cheers

Hi Dayne, yeah I was pretty gutted but these things happen (especially in the lakes!), we did an A to B walk from Thirlmere to Watendlath and took the photos then, passed Blea Tarn on the way but didnt have my fishing gear eith me as it was late afternoon when the rain stopped that day, thought long and hard about taking my gear but no one else fishes and it would of meant me walking back on my own, possibly late and I didn't want to be one of those idiots that mountain rescue had to waste their time with! It was a little bit like "let's have a look what you could of won" but at least ill know where I'm going next time.

Cheers, Jon
