Default Fishing first tied fly

Hi there

Do folks catch uing the first fly they tied ?

Received a fly tying kit from someone who's stopped fishing, so was having a go at buzzer patterns last week, and got a couple of interesting results to say the least !!

Should I try them out?
Or develop some more tying skills ?

Both. It's great fun to catch on your own flies and you never stop learning or getting better at the craft. Best of luck to you.

I reckon you'll get a lot more pleasure & also better results if you fish with flies you're reasonably happy with.
Also from a practical point of view, if the tying's a complete mess then there's a reasonably good chance the fly might disintegrate whilst using it.
The scruffiest flies can catch, but if I wasn't happy about a fly I'd tied then I wouldn't put it on the end of my leader.
Why not try again & post some pics, then people can gauge where you're at & also offer constructive criticism.

Might wait to tie some more recognisable patterns before I post pics !!

Don't want the fish telling everyone how bad the current ones are, or, at the total other end of the scale, how too successful they were !!!!

I'd fish them, my first fly had white marabou tail, pi nk floss body and white marabou wing but the head was about a centimetre high and was halfway down the hook, I still caught 3 and missed 2 on it at my club...

It is great fun tying and then fishing with your own flies. But not all of them Catch. It took me a good few attempts at tying before i got the confidence in using and catching fish on my own flies. But a few years later i use nothing else but flies that i have tied as i know they will work for me when i need them.

Great thing about tying is that it saves you alot of money in the long run. (thats after forking out a fortune for all the different nits and bobs you need)

Hi Baby_Mechanic1
In the early days of my fly tying instructions with J Hartley of Colne Anglers he said, "Don't worry if your flies aren't perfect the fish don't know the difference".
Well years on I learned he was wrong, on dry fly patterns particularly, the fish can spot a poorly tied flies also they don't float correctly. Its not as critical on nymphs, wets, buzzers, and lures.

Don't worry have fun and success will follow.

Didn't think I'd be wrong in trying them out, just wondered if trout 'marked' flies, as I'd probably get a lowish mark for one of my buzzers, which has it's wing bud's half-way along compared to close to the hook eye

Will give them a go, and take along some of those that I've bought !

Give them a go-whats the worse that can happen. If you fish teams of flies perhaps just use one of yours in the team,Its a great feeling when you start catching on your own flies

all the best Nick

When I started tying flies I had a copy of T & S, some borrowed thread from my mum, a few feathers from the duvet and no idea how to put it all together. Didn't even have a vice, just held the hook in my hand.

I tied some trully awful flies which were useless. To be honest my techniques were not great.

The first proper fly I tied was still a little rough round the edges. A size 12 black zulu with most of the hackle at the rear of the hook.

Two casts into Buinne Mhor and I hooked my first trout on the fly.

And that was the beginning.

Like everything there is a learning curve. Some things steeper than others.

Enjoy the journey

Stuart
