Default Childrens fly rods

My 9 year old son has shown a real interest in fly fishing lately. He has been with me a few times to a small fishing lake and i have tried to get him started with my rods. However, he is struggling to cast with them due to the length and weight.
Could anyone recommend a good starter set up for him.

I've taught three grandchildren to fish and would recommend at nine they start off with a 7'.6" small river rod and a reel with a #3 or #4 weight line. You will be surprised how quickly they master the cast and a season later move them up to an 8'.6" #5 weight line.

i mentioned this on another post, had an 8 year old last week, couldnt hold the rod well enough to get any control over it, due to the size of the handle, if he cant get his hand round it.......the other thing is muscles, you dont need much but they aint there yet.

if your serious, David Norwich could make a rod that would be right for him, and he would have it for future generations.

Thats just the ticket.

If necessary get him to use the rod as a double hander, bringing the other had up to help the action at the base of the rod.

My son is 8 and has just started. he uses an 8ft #4 quite well (he is only small for his age). TBH my lad had mastered and over head cast / hauling and shooting (a small amount) within 2 1hr sessions with me... They really pick it up very quickly, but I do watch him like a hawk and ensure that he keeps everything as it should be.

Dont forget - glasses and hat

My grandson (7) had a odyssey which I acquired on here, but unfortunately whilst on the boat with me, it got the tip snapped off His was the 7'6" 4/5# and I was so pleased with the way he was fishing with it I got him the exact replacement from this firm which I will highly recommend to anyone, excellent service and communication.
