Default Recommendations for East Lothian

With the Bankl Holiday comnig up I tought I would take the opportunity of casting a fly somewhere in East Lothian! Only problems is that there seems to be quite a wide choice and I would prefer to get some recommendations rather than rely on the sales blurb from the fishery managers (no offence meant). Can anyone recommend a nice still water that is not to busy but has a good head of trout! advice on tactics for thaa particular water would also be appreciated.

Another ex Haddington opinion!.
Markle is relatively small and will be busy as is bank holiday weekend.
Maybe try Tweedale just south of Gifford, is a bit bigger and has several lochs/ponds.
Is a good place for buzzers and smaller flies, but you will still catch pulling lures.
For the wild side try Whiteadder reservoir, has vast head of half pound wild browns.
Maybe even contemplate river tyne, runs through Haddington, for small wild browns, and occasional sea trout.
regards
bert

Would second Tweedale fishing great just now lots big fish being caught. Just get yourself some black and silver buzzers and you won't go wrong.

Try Whinney Loch at Coldingham. You will need to book though

Was there today and there where fish rising constantly throughout the day. Landed 6, lost loads and practised long range catch and release all day!!

If you want to try river fishing the River Tyne is a super brown trout river. It runs through Haddington and down past Hailes Castle to East Linton. A day ticket is only £5.00 from the J.S Main in Haddington.

I would avoid Markle.

Full of the powerbait brigade and it just feels so artificial. For me fishing is as much about the beautiful places it takes you as the fish you are seeking and Markle fails to deliver on both counts.

Horses for courses though.

East Lothian doesn't realy have much to offer in comparison to other areas. I would either fish the Tyne in one of it's secluded valleys or else the Esk which flows into Musselburgh which is stocked with rainbows and has a head of browns.

Tweeddale is superb, the fish are big and in very good condition. The food is as good as you will get at any fishery.

cheers Diarmid.
