Default Double Taper

Sell it to me folks???

I had a couple of hours on a smally river tonight, fishing WF4. A few casts landed a bit heavy but that was really down to me and not the line. So I got to thinking that maybe a DT would be more suitable for small water fishing... But then if I 'fluff' a cast it will still land heavy. Clearly I have missed the point So, what the hell IS a double taper for?

Whoooooooooooooops - I suspect it might be a can of worms then?

However, they are ubiquitous in tackle shops.

if your casting distance is less than the belly of your Wf (i.e. 10 to 12 yards plus tippet), it doesn't matter whether you use a Wf or DT.

The main advantage of a DT is being able to roll cast or spey cast further than the belly of a WF (i.e. normally 10to 12 yards plus), other than that there is little difference for normal casting.

At long range, the ability to shoot the running line of a WF gives a distance advantage without over loading the rod to the same extent as a DT would but a good caster will generally end up with about the same length of line out.

OK - So it's a line for roll casting?

I use DT lines in 4 wts and below and WF in 5 weights and above. Unless you are using specialty WF lines like a bass taper with more of the weight forward in the taper, my understanding is that a standard WF taper is close to or identical to the DT taper. The difference is the running line at the back end of a WF line.

To confirm go to this Orvis line chart and compare the front taper length of a 5 wt. WF and DT line. Both have 66 inches and a tip length of 6 inches. They are identical. Compare the front taper of all the WF vs the DT lines and they will be the same.

Fly Line Taper Charts | Reference

So if you don't need the running line of the WF line for shooting long casts, get a DT line. I cut mine in half and use a loop to loop connection with running fly line and save the other half for later use. It saves money. If you are going to shoot a 4 wt on long casts, then get a wf 4 wt. I hardly fish a wt line at those distances so I us a DT for my 4 wt floating lines.

You can get level running fly line in many diameters. I use the .027 diameter. Pick up the one that fits your needs to make you own modified fly line. It is how we used to do it before WF lines were developed.

Thanks SC,

I tend to fish from the bank at distance, so shooting line is pretty normal. I think I might just have a blast with a DT just to try it out - I like the cost saving initiative, great idea

What range are you fishing at?

If you're dumping it at ranges up to 40-50ft with a WF, you wont notice much difference with a DT.

That's about the score sometimes. But I am quite enjoying some close up stuff from time to time so I think I shall give a DT a whirl. I asume the presentation isn't really affected?

No difference up to 40 or 50ft. DT better for distance (if you can carry the line) and longer mends/roll casts.
