Default braided mono strength

hi folks,

i've recently discovered how easy it is to make braided loops for line to leader connections etc! i've used various methods over the last couple of years but now trying braided mono loops again for a change. i'm about to start experimenting with shooting heads for my 6wt, and i'm sure braided mono loops will do the trick for connecting shooting head to running line too (i use 1wt line fore running line). Just wondered what the best strength of mono would be for this application? i have some fairly flimsy stuff i was given for backing once, but need more and a quick google suggests i buy up to 50lb or so. does this sound about right? any advice appreciated.

cheers,
tosh

50lb is far too hollow for a 6wt to running line. 25lb would do.

I wouldn't bother with braided loops between the head and running line, I prefer making my own loops which won't have the same amount of play/hinge-ing that you get from back to back braided loops.

GuyFromLaw is correct in saying 50lb braid has too large a internal dia for a #6 line. This link may be off interest to you as it explains how to make a double catch braided loop which is far stronger than the normal single one

There are several methods of making and attaching loops to fly lines

thanks for the replies guys.

guyfromlaw what type of loop do you recommend for attatching head to running line?
do you mean strip coating, fold back on itself to make a loop and whip to secure?
