Default no room for backing???

Hi, I've just wound my line onto my reel.

Opposite way first to see how much backing I will need to add. There is no room left, i can just get the line on.

It is a leeda profil reel and rio outbound wf6f.

Do i just go without backing? Also there is loops allready on the line, i assume these are fine to use.

Take it out onto some grass cast as far as you can, whats left on the reel chop off and add some backing.Me i personally don't like pre formed loops on lines,so chop these off also

Neil

You can of course do without out backing, but it's a risk

Depends on the line - e.g. Pirate and Barrio GT lines are longer than standard. For some reels it's better IMHO to take off a short length of running level line off the rear of the line and allow for more backing.
If you can cast that much out you'll also have the skill to shoot the backing

Personally I've never played a trout down tut backin as they say but some do.

Defo have some on would be my suggestion.

....Unless you're after seatrout/salmon - then.....have a lot on!

If a wf cut 5 -7 yards of the running line off, chances are unless you are a really good caster you won't use it anyway. Use some 20lb spiderwire or braid as backing as it takes up very little room.

I would not like to fish without 20 - 30 yds of backing. You don't get too many takes at extreme range but when you do it's very handy to have. I find it strange that the line won't fit. I've just had a look on t'internet and the smallest size for this reel is 5/6, it must be a small 5/6 erring on the 4 1/2 to 5 by the look of it. As has been said already if you are comfortable with it you could crop your running line, but for me it would have to be a bigger reel......................birdsnest

I am guessing you went for the outbound for distance casting,so personally i would not want to cut the running line down.Go for a bigger reel

all the best Nick

Not a good idea to have no backing, what if you get that fish of a lifetime. You have been given a number of choices and in the end you have to decide.
If it was me, I would go for a bigger reel.

As per the other suggestions, either cut off 5-10 yards of the running line and use a braid (spiderwire, fireline, etc) as backing or get a bigger reel. During the last boat session I had at Chew, the fish would keep moving away from the boat and could only be tempted at long range (2 - 4 turns of flyline left on reel) and would go into the backing each time. Obviously not so important if fishing smaller waters, but I would still put some on.

Carl.

Under NO circumstances would I fish Farmoor 1 without backing, and lots of it, on the reel. Last trip a 4lb fish stripped 30 yards of backing off just for fun, and it's not an unusual occurrence either. Get a bigger reel is the obvious answer.
