Default Fly Fishing Techniques

A friend and I were having a discussion on the weekend whilst sinking a few beers and putting the world to rights, when we got onto the subject of how to fish various patterns and when to fish these patterns.

Now yes there are books on match the hatch and lots of information on what to fish at the various times of year and where to fish them too, but there is very little we have been able to find on "how to" fish them.

Most of the fly fishing shows on TV tend to be about them catching trout or other game fish at various locations, there is often a brief mention of the pattern being used but never any real instruction or examples of how to fish the patterns.

So I'm curious to know, does anyone know of any such resource on line? Does it even exist? I know I've looked around and tried to find something which would be a good resource for this however so far I have not managed to find it.

Pete

The only thing I can suggest is to pick a particular fly or lure. If you look it up on Google it will tell you about how to fish it and when. You would have to do this with every fly you have in mind.

Oliver Edwards essential skills videos concentrate on a few different flies in each episode, showing how to tie them, the entomology, and also how to fish each technique. I found them very useful for river fishing techniques.

I think it would be great to have a show, where you get to see two types of patterns to fish in still waters and on rivers in each main geographic region of the UK for the various times throughout the year.

Watch this space.... an idea is afoot.
