Default Wrist Support

Like many newcomers to fly fishing I am having trouble stopping my wrist coming into play on my cast after I have been fishing for a while due to an aching wrist.
Would a wrist support help or is it just better to carry on as I am sure with time and practice this problem my be overcome

I may have this wrong but of your wrist is sore after a days casting then it sounds like you are using it excessively, there are a couple of things you can do, first is buy the Lee Wulff Wrist lock, that helps, in fact if you wear it for a couple of weeks you will be cured of excessive wrist break.

What I did was to use some string, tied around the rod butt and tied around my wrist, 20 minutes per day casting with this on, if I tried to use to much wrist I would certainly know about it, after 3 sessions my wrist control improved immensely, to the point that my arm wasn't marked after removing the strap. You could also make it out of strong elastic.

Remember though, slight and controlled wrist break can be a very good thing

A lesson may help, I think Phil Ratcliffe is near you

Chris

Ive put one on some pupils ive had and it gives them the feeling that they need to have , it does help i would say,if you cant help breaking your wrist there aint any point in standing for hours doing it, try this,, ,if your right handed take hold of the rod, point your right index finger up the handle so its in line with the rod tip you will have to rotate your hand round the handle a bit and you finger is lying on the cork of the handle ,now cast . let me know how you get on

I bought some velcro and that works.Cheap, simple to use and will work also.round the wirist and round the butt of the rod,but dont get dependant on it .Use it for a few weeks and take it off, your brain should have the signals of coordination by then and if not ,simply put it back on and repeat till you dont need it anymore.
maybe slow your stroke down also, remember it is the gentle art of fly fishing and gentle is better than force.

Shove the butt down your jacket sleeve or get some string like Chris pointed out or velcro like Kevin.Although i agree with others if your wrist is aching after a days fishing then somethings amiss.Book yourself in for some lessons that's what id do

I had that problem too and used to tuck the butt of the rod into the sleeve of my jacket which did help. Eventually I paid out for casting lessons during which I was advised to concentrate on bringing the bicep into play when making the back cast by conciously contracting it. You'll discover that it's just about impossible to use the wrist when doing this. Worked for me anyway.

I found that by relaxing my grip I cured most of my wrist break problems and also achieved a crisper stop. Visualising stopping the hand rather than the rod really helped.
