Default What stillwater near.....swindon

Hi
I'm off to Swindon soon for a few days, staying near the centre.
Looking to leave the other half shopping while I do a spot of fly fishing for trout in a still water.
Can anyone recommend such a place dont mind driving upto hour or so..
thanks

Chew may be in range(south of Bristol) or Lechlade and Bushyleaze would be closer

hope this helps Nick

Because I'm London based I'm more aware of fisheries east of Swindon.

Haywards Farm is at Theale, J12 at Reading about 24 miles from Swindon along the M4
haywards farm trout fishery

Closer as the crow flies but further because no handy junction, is Barn Elms Fishery near Bradfield, again J12 M4. Smaller but prettier.
Barn Elms Fly Fishery, TroutMasters Lake, Bradfield, near Theale, in the Pang Valley, Berkshire, Sport Fly Fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout, Fly Fishing tuition

Haven't been to either yet this year so not sure how they're fishing but there might be reports in the stillwaters section here on the forum.

The two Farmoor reservoirs are quite close to Swindon.

To my mind there is simply no choice. Farmoor it has to be. F1 is averaging over 7 at present and F2 is really difficult at 3.3. I'm off to F1 tomorrow. £25 for a c&r ticket when you can catch fish up to 7 or 8lbs and with an average of over 3lbs just can't be beaten.

Just to update. F1 yesterday I had 15 fish on a floating line and nymphs. Smallest about 2.5lbs and biggest about 4.5lbs. If you go check your backing knot because you'll see it go whizzing out of the tip ring when one of those 4lb specials goes charging off.

Nearer to Swindon there is also Churn Pool and The Watermark, if you like small stillwaters.
