Default Grinner

Just wondering if there's any reason why I can't attach my fly line to the backing using a grinner knot rather than a nail knot (grinner knot in the backing onto the fly line) or is there some advantage I'm missing in using the nail knot. The grinner seems to give a very secure, small knot.

i presume you mean a w/f line just use a knot you happy tying and using, i have never had a fish take line to backing, even some biggies on farmoor or big lake bushy. i just get my friend to tye a nail knot as my eyes are not so good now, but try your grinner. and happy fishing

Can't see how a uni/grinner would work as you need a eye ( hook or poss spool ) to be able to tie the knot. Here's the one i use

I would have thought that an albright would have been better than a grinner. But both will be bulkier than a nail knot. You could put a braided loop on the reel end and then use a grinner or similar.................birdsnest

You can use a uni-knot from backing direct to end of fly line.

I find it works far better in braid core fly lines as the knot can strip the lining off from mono-core lines.

Make sure you super-glue the knot afterwards and give it some time to dry.

I often uni-knot my leaders onto my fly lines and find this these work as well as braided loops.

If you think about it both the knots are more or less the same when tied. Just a differant way of getting there.

Thanks for your replies lads. There seems to be a bit of confusion here what I tie is a 4 turn grinner knot just in the backing onto the fly line (yes it is a weight forward) there is no knot in the fly line itself the grinner just grips onto the end of the fly line. Thanks for the superglue tip I'll try that the next time I put on a new fly line.
