I don't want to start a pub brawl about this, but I am pretty sure that BobP is right about the booby first being developed as a fly for very deep fishing. It was initially publicised by Mickey Bewick and Gordon Fraser in about 1984-85 with subtly different applications - there's "booby nymphs" (GF) and "booby lures" (MB). Other uses such as the washing line, wake fly fishing, and (sadly) static ledgering by grumpy old men at Farmoor 2 reservoir, followed a few years later.
