Post double hooks, for trout.

In this day & age, why do comp anglers still use double hooks. I know the pressure of landing fish & taking home the prize at the end of the day, is what it's all about. But do we really still need to use doubles to do this. I personally think all fishing should be carried out on single barbless hooks. Ok we might drop a few fish, but hey thats fishing.

give a thought to the fish that get hooked up on big lures, sometimes with 3 trebles hanging underneath them often see on tv and fishing programmes they get pretty mangled up often hooking the outside of its face or eye. so i suppose double hooks aint too extreme, but saying that i would never use them and don't know of anyone who would (for trout anyway)

A lot of comp mini lures are tied on doubles.

I have never fished a comp in my life but I think small doubles are mainly used for weight as I dont think you can add extra weight to comp flies, it does however limit the amount of flies that can be used at the same time due to the hook point rule.

Dahboy has got it spot on. I tie more than a few hundred competition flies each year and am well aware of the choice of doubles for the point fly. It will act like an anchor and help to get the droppers down quicker. There are hooks available that are very heavy wire, single and still fit the guage, these will do the same thing as a double.
One point always worth bearing in mind, the Kamasan double, unless it has changed or I have got things wrong, does not fit the hook guage. In the past, when asked to use them, I have handed them back to the angler stipulating that they were 'oversize' and it was their resposibility to bend the eye down. This weakens the hook substantially.

The Kam B270 #10 is a tad too big for the gauge, the #12 fits perfectly.

Although I have them in my box, I rarely use doubles, the weight can be an advantage at times though.

Somebody else telling the rest of us what we should or should not do. "I don't like it, therefore it must be banned" I think colinmac needs to concentrate on his own fishing and leave others to their own devices.

Bob, chillout . We used to put kids down mines & up chimneys, but we moved on from that, realising it was incorrect & wrong. Nowadays we have fast, slow & floating lines to suit every occasion. So personally i dont see the need for doubles anymore.

Colinmac.........I think forum threads relevant to comp anglers should be just that.......why in the name of the big man would someone feel the need to start a thread with tosh like this. It's a bit like asking why we get in-growing toenails and toothache.
I'd suggest a table tennis bat for your Xmas stocking this year but as a matter of interest......are you telling us that the points on barbless hooks don't actually go into fish ?

Why is it some people just refuse to move with the modern world. Teuchter, doh! Of course the point of a barbless hook enters the fish. No one said any different. If you care to read back. Maybe you should take a trip to spec savers. As for table tennis, it's like golf, to boring hitting a little white ball around.
