Default Floatant...

Hi there and good morning!

I was just wondering what floatant is regarded as 'the best'? I recently purchased the Gink brand floatant, as it seemed to be the most commonly available, but on my outing with it yesterday I have to say, I was less than impressed. It left nasty slicks and didn't seem to do a very good job of keeping my fly proud in the water, usually sinking after 4 or 5 casts...is that normal? I was also applying a little to my braided loop to help keep it afloat, but it didn't seem to help at all!

Thanks.

hello yes it does go greasy and clogs drys rather than a nice natural, if i know what fly is on say mayfly i will dunk in liquid silicon mucilin the night before fishing, aquel is not bad, or permafloat, i have just started using dilly wax and so far is ok, purchased off here. having tried so many over the years its just trial and error and finding 1 you like. happy fishing

Frogs fanny or that spray stuff.

But hey have you noticed nothing sinks faster than a dry fly you dragged through the water because of some errant cast! Normally just as you see some fish or other rising.

I use a Leeda aerosol it's by far the best I've used yet, it's nice and dry and stiffens hackles.

The trick with Gink (like most floatants) is to put it on the night before. Once dry it is fine and never gives me any any problems.

Normally once a fly starts sinking, i'll change it off and use another, re ginking the original when i get home.

the thing with Gink is its quite thick and require a good bit of heat to get it nice consitency,i like to put some in a old film spool case sit it next to the radiator put my dry flies in it and give it a good shake .hth Johnny.

Another vote from me for the Leeda aerosol spray for dry flies.

Gink is good for greasing up fly line tips and leader butts.

It's all in the thread. Halstead and Hartley make it and it is a liquid that you dunk your fly in.
