Default Barlow Fishery, Derbyshire

Hi all,

Starting to plan my annual fishing/camping/drinking trip with my cousin and other cousins husband. Was looking at Barlow Fishery in Derbyshire.

Fishing in Barlow, Derbyshire

Thought it looked quite good as there is camping on site, 4 trout lakes and 4 coarse lakes. Cafe on site too for bacon sarnies! It's also about evenly spaced for travel for myself as I live in Northumberland and my cousin who lives in Milton Keynes.

Anyone got any knowledge and if so can you say if it would be suitable for a jolly boys outing for a few days?

Or any other suggestions of places offering similar facilities.

thanks,

Nick.

You can have a good time at Barlow. If you do go, ask for permission to fish the Barlow Brook. Very good close quarter small stream fishing with some surprising brown trout. The Double Badger is a great fly on the Barlow Brook.

Haven't fished there much recently but Ladybower is fishing really well and is only about a 10-15 minute drive from there.

If you want a really good few days, take matthew9's suggestion. Try Ladybower, there a loads of campsites in the Hope Valley. The Ladybower Inn, which looks down onto the reservoir, has some very good real ale ( try the Farmers Blonde ) and the quality of fish takes some beating. The fish have got their noses up at the moment, consequently there is some good sport to be had.

Hi,

Fished Ladybower on Bank Holiday Monday during the extreme winds. New owner this year who is doing allot of work to get the lady back to its former glory.

Its £20 for a full day. the bay is always a good start as he has been stocking there.

I had 6 in 5 hours. 3 trout each about 2lb and 3 big perch all on a orange marabou buzzer.

Barlow isn't up to much these days - poor quality of fish and few of them as well. Ignore what it says on the website about "takeable" size of fish - you'll be lucky to find one and if you do it will be becuse it's "differently abled!". See comments on "stillwater reports". Quite a few little browns in the brook tho. Camp site is ok, usually plenty of space to pitch away from others, and there is a pub in the village - food not bad at the snack hut either. It's ok as a base to fish Press Manor, and as others have suggested, Ladybower.

Hi all,

Thanks everyone for the advice. If the campsite is good probably will use it as a base and look at some of the other places nearby to fish!

That's if I am sober enough to cast!!

thanks again,

Nick.

i fished at barlow last week and must have been on a different barlow . i had a couple of nice enough rainbows about the pound mark and missed a couple more. Not huge, but a nice size on light tackle and " proper flies" pond olives, damsels and saw a mayfly hatch.
many anglers flog away with heavy rezzy gear and lures and at times catch little it is true, but there were loadsa fish on top. i know a couple of fish about a pound is not much to set the pulse racing but we had them in 5 or six casts.

the week before a lady angler fished a lunns particular at dusk and had three fish and some more nearlys. rod was a 8.5 4wt 12ft leader 6x tippit. not bad fish and not bad sport either. i often fish 6ish to duskish and am often the only one there!
fishing is free to campers , just bear in mind some of those fish see more flies in a week then most do in a short lifetime and approach accordingly.

and yes it is a nice base for press and the bower

nice that another lady angler joins the sport," regards" in spite of me disagreeing with you!

It's ok to disagree - maybe we'll have to agree that it could just have been stocked. Interesting that you are often the only one there tho .... even up to last year you wouldn't have been alone When i was down there a couple of weeks back i met up with an angler who had watched first two ponds being netted to retrieve the koi and all that came out in terms of trout were "tiddlers".
If Barlow got back to the form it was in even three years ago it would be cracking! I started there around three and would fish it two or three times a week but as the price practically doubled and fish quality fell off not even the lovely surroundings would keep me returning
Still, each to his own - tight lines glymo

Greyhoundgirl, absolutely agree with everything you have said. Several of the lads on my fly tying class at Brimington used to be season ticket holders and regular visitors. I don't think any of them visit any more. Most of them are retired and fish two or three times a week, often travelling a fair distance for a days fishing. I am all for promoting local fisheries but only if they justify praise. On that note, I understand Press is fishing quite well at the moment.
