Question daddy long legs

just removed a large daddy long legs from the kitchen.

is this not a bit early?

correct me if im wrong (and im sure you will) but...

i thought they usually appear nearer the end of the summer.

would any one on here fish a dry daddy at this time of year?

Two, arses stuck together, landed on me on the Avon, near Stonehouse yesterday. I always thought they came later too.

Global warming? Harsh winter? Dry spring? Bin Laden's death?

Had one or two in the house over the last couple of weeks; horrible dangly critturs...

Fishing them? Well, they were smashing them off the top at "the fishery that dares not speak it's name" near Ludlow last week...

They appear from late April through to November. Loads of different ones.

Saw quite a few damselflies out yesterday, thought that was a bit on the early side too.

If you read your entomology textbooks you'll discover that there are 176 ( if failing memory still serves ) species of Tipulidae in the UK.

With many emerging at different times starting about now .

Yes the main emergences of the common ones are Sept/Oct depending on prevailing weather conditions being right . Usually a feast or a famine - they are very variable .

And I've occasionallly caught on dry daddy from April through the years but better and more often later on .

Nothing odd about it !

Best wishes

Steve P
