I prefer the automatic version. If I ever need it, it'll be because I've fallen in. If I've fallen, I could well be injured and not in a position to inflate a manual type.

Most life jackets on the market t'day are automatic, especially those sold in the fishing world. My preference is the waiscoat/lifejacket combination - they are far more comfortable to wear and are practical to boot.
But beware!!!! automatic lifejacket's are prone to 'going off' in the boot of the car if they are put in with wet gear. I've been there and it's not cheap to replace the chemical sensor and air bottle. Now, I always hang mine on the passenger seat and hang up to dry when I get home. Never had a problem since.

I've worn a Crewsaver automatic lifejacket for ten years. It only went off accidentally once having fished Rutland in torrential rain all day.

I've treated myself to a new 150N AUTO/ MANUAL INFLATE LIFEJACKET £49.00 from Stocks Fishery On-Line Shop this year.

Mine is a manual, as I tend to go out in small boats and Kayak, which can be a bit wet, chances of you hitting your head when falling out of a small boat are slim, but it's up to the individual.

automatic ones are great for big boats and the sea but if you go wading in them, they also tend to go off as often the sensor is at the bottom of the jacket.

When I'm wearing mine, the bottom of the lifejacket is about level with my navel. I never wade deeper than my goolies anyway so it's not a problem.
